The Sin Of Sodom: Pride And Selfishness

Ezekiel 16:44-54 reads,

16:44Behold, everyone who uses proverbs shall use this proverb against you, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. 16:45You are the daughter of your mother, who loathes her husband and her children; and you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their children: your mother was a Hittite, and your father an Amorite. 16:46Your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells at your left hand, she and her daughters; and your younger sister, who dwells at your right hand, is Sodom and her daughters. 16:47Yet have you not walked in their ways, nor done after their abominations; but, as if that were a very little thing, you were more corrupt than they in all your ways. 16:48As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, Sodom your sister has not done, she nor her daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters. 16:49Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. 16:50They were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good. 16:51Neither has Samaria committed half of your sins; but you have multiplied your abominations more than they, and have justified your sisters by all your abominations which you have done. 16:52You also, bear you your own shame, in that you have given judgment for your sisters; through your sins that you have committed more abominable than they, they are more righteous that you: yes, be also confounded, and bear your shame, in that you have justified your sisters. 16:53I will turn again their captivity, the captivity of Sodom and her daughters, and the captivity of Samaria and her daughters, and the captivity of your captives in the midst of them; 16:54that you may bear your own shame, and may be ashamed because of all that you have done, in that you are a comfort to them.

How To Avoid Death And Live

Ezekiel 18 reads,

18:1The word of Yahweh came to me again, saying, 18:2What do you mean, that you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge? 18:3As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, you shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel.

18:4Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul who sins, he shall die. 18:5But if a man is just, and does that which is lawful and right, 18:6and has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither has defiled his neighbor’s wife, neither has come near to a woman in her impurity, 18:7and has not wronged any, but has restored to the debtor his pledge, has taken nothing by robbery, has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment; 18:8he who has not given forth on interest, neither has taken any increase, who has withdrawn his hand from iniquity, has executed true justice between man and man, 18:9has walked in my statutes, and has kept my ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, says the Lord Yahweh.

He Who Commits Abominations Shall Surely Die

18:10If he fathers a son who is a robber, a shedder of blood, and who does any one of these things, 18:11and who does not any of those duties, but even has eaten on the mountains, and defiled his neighbor’s wife, 18:12has wronged the poor and needy, has taken by robbery, has not restored the pledge, and has lifted up his eyes to the idols, has committed abomination, 18:13has given forth on interest, and has taken increase; shall he then live? He shall not live: he has done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be on him.

18:14Now, behold, if he fathers a son, who sees all his father’s sins, which he has done, and fears, and does not such like; 18:15who has not eaten on the mountains, neither has lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, has not defiled his neighbor’s wife, 18:16neither has wronged any, has not taken anything to pledge, neither has taken by robbery, but has given his bread to the hungry, and has covered the naked with a garment; 18:17who has withdrawn his hand from the poor, who has not received interest nor increase, has executed my ordinances, has walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. 18:18As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity.

Why Does Not The Son Bear The Iniquity Of The Father?

18:19Yet say you, Why does not the son bear the iniquity of the father?

When the son has done that which is lawful and right, and has kept all my statutes, and has done them, he shall surely live. 18:20The soul who sins, he shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be on him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.

Does Yahweh Have Any Pleasure In The Death Of The Wicked?

18:21But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he has committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 18:22None of his transgressions that he has committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he has done he shall live. 18:23Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked? Says the Lord Yahweh; and not rather that he should return from his way, and live? 18:24But when the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he has done shall be remembered: in his trespass that he has trespassed, and in his sin that he has sinned, in them shall he die.

Is Not Yahweh's Way Just?

18:25Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, house of Israel: Is my way not equal? Aren’t your ways unequal? 18:26When the righteous man turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, and dies therein; in his iniquity that he has done shall he die. 18:27Again, when the wicked man turns away from his wickedness that he has committed, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 18:28Because he considers, and turns away from all his transgressions that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 18:29Yet says the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. House of Israel, are not my ways equal? Are not your ways unequal? 18:30Therefore I will judge you, house of Israel, everyone according to his ways, says the Lord Yahweh. Return you, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. 18:31Cast away from you all your transgressions, in which you have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will you die, house of Israel? 18:32For I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies, says the Lord Yahweh: therefore turn yourselves, and live.

Declare To Sinners Their Sins

Ezekiel 23:36-49 reads,

23:36Yahweh said moreover to me: Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations. 23:37For they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands; and with their idols have they committed adultery; and they have also caused their sons, whom they bore to me, to pass through the fire to them to be devoured. 23:38Moreover this they have done to me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my Sabbaths. 23:39For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, behold, thus have they done in the midst of my house.

23:40Furthermore you have sent for men who come from far, to whom a messenger was sent, and, behold, they came; for whom you did wash yourself, paint your eyes, and deck yourself with ornaments, 23:41and sit on a stately bed, with a table prepared before it, whereupon you did set my incense and my oil. 23:42The voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with men of the common sort were brought drunkards from the wilderness; and they put bracelets on the hands of them twain, and beautiful crowns on their heads. 23:43Then said I of her who was old in adulteries, Now will they play the prostitute with her, and she with them. 23:44They went in to her, as they go in to a prostitute: so went they in to Oholah and to Oholibah, the lewd women.

Yahweh Punishes Lewd Women As A Deterrent Against Future Lewdness

23:45Righteous men, they shall judge them with the judgment of adulteresses, and with the judgment of women who shed blood; because they are adulteresses, and blood is in their hands. 23:46For thus says the Lord Yahweh: I will bring up a company against them, and will give them to be tossed back and forth and robbed. 23:47The company shall stone them with stones, and dispatch them with their swords; they shall kill their sons and their daughters, and burn up their houses with fire. 23:48Thus will I cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be taught not to do after your lewdness. 23:49They shall recompense your lewdness on you, and you shall bear the sins of your idols; and you shall know that I am the Lord Yahweh.

Yahweh's Judgement On Satan On Account Of Satan's Sins

Ezekiel 28:11-19 reads,

28:11Moreover the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, 28:12Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and tell him, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: You seal up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 28:13You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, the sardius, the topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the emerald, and gold: the workmanship of your tambourines and of your pipes was in you; in the day that you were created they were prepared. 28:14You were the anointed cherub who covers: and I set you, so that you were on the holy mountain of God; you have walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 28:15You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created, until unrighteousness was found in you. 28:16By the abundance of your traffic they filled the midst of you with violence, and you have sinned: therefore I have cast you as profane out of the mountain of God; and I have destroyed you, covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 28:17Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness: I have cast you to the ground; I have laid you before kings, that they may see you. 28:18By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your traffic, you have profaned your sanctuaries; therefore have I brought forth a fire from the midst of you; it has devoured you, and I have turned you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all those who see you. 28:19All those who know you among the peoples shall be astonished at you: you are become a terror, and you shall nevermore have any being.

Turn You, Turn You From Your Evil Ways

Ezekiel 33:10-20 reads,

33:10You, son of man, tell the house of Israel: Thus you speak, saying, Our transgressions and our sins are on us, and we pine away in them; how then can we live? 33:11Tell them, As I live, says the Lord Yahweh, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn you, turn you from your evil ways; for why will you die, house of Israel?

The Righteousness Of The Righteous Shall Not Deliver Him In The Day Of His Disobedience

33:12You, son of man, tell the children of your people, The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him in the day of his disobedience; and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall thereby in the day that he turns from his wickedness; neither shall he who is righteous be able to live thereby in the day that he sins. 33:13When I tell the righteous, that he shall surely live; if he trust to his righteousness, and commit iniquity, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered; but in his iniquity that he has committed, therein shall he die. 33:14Again, when I say to the wicked, You shall surely die; if he turn from his sin, and do that which is lawful and right; 33:15if the wicked restore the pledge, give again that which he had taken by robbery, walk in the statutes of life, committing no iniquity; he shall surely live, he shall not die. 33:16None of his sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him: he has done that which is lawful and right; he shall surely live. 33:17Yet the children of your people say, The way of the Lord is not equal: but as for them, their way is not equal. 33:18When the righteous turns from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, he shall even die therein. 33:19When the wicked turns from his wickedness, and does that which is lawful and right, he shall live thereby. 33:20Yet you say, The way of the Lord is not equal. House of Israel, I will judge you everyone after his ways.

Sin Defiles Sinners

Ezekiel 37:15-28 reads,

37:15The word of Yahweh came again to me, saying, 37:16You, son of man, take one stick, and write on it, For Judah, and for the children of Israel his companions: then take another stick, and write on it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions: 37:17and join them for you one to another into one stick, that they may become one in your hand. 37:18When the children of your people shall speak to you, saying, Will you not show us what you mean by these? 37:19tell them, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his companions; and I will put them with it, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in my hand. 37:20The sticks whereon you write shall be in your hand before their eyes. 37:21Say to them, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Behold, I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, where they are gone, and will gather them on every side, and bring them into their own land: 37:22and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king shall be king to them all; and they shall be no more two nations, neither shall they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all; 37:23neither shall they defile themselves any more with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions; but I will save them out of all their dwelling-places, in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them: so shall they be my people, and I will be their God. 37:24My servant David shall be king over them; and they all shall have one shepherd: they shall also walk in my ordinances, and observe my statutes, and do them. 37:25They shall dwell in the land that I have given to Jacob my servant, in which your fathers lived; and they shall dwell therein, they, and their children, and their children’s children, forever: and David my servant shall be their prince for ever. 37:26Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them forevermore. 37:27My tent also shall be with them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 37:28The nations shall know that I am Yahweh who sanctifies Israel, when my sanctuary shall be in the midst of them forevermore.

The Most High Rules In The Kingdom Of Men, And Gives It To Whoever He Will

Daniel 4 reads,

4:1Nebuchadnezzar the king, to all the peoples, nations, and languages, who dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you. 4:2It has seemed good to me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God has worked toward me. 4:3How great are his signs! And how mighty are his wonders! His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

4:4I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. 4:5I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts on my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. 4:6Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known to me the interpretation of the dream. 4:7Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known to me the interpretation of it. 4:8But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him, saying, 4:9Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in you, and no secret troubles you, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation of it.

4:10Thus were the visions of my head on my bed: I saw, and, behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and the height of it was great. 4:11The tree grew, and was strong, and the height of it reached to the sky, and the sight of it to the end of all the earth. 4:12The leaves of it were beautiful, and the fruit of it much, and in it was food for all: the animals of the field had shadow under it, and the birds of the sky lived in the branches of it, and all flesh was fed from it. 4:13I saw in the visions of my head on my bed, and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from the sky. 4:14He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the animals get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches. 4:15Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of the sky: and let his portion be with the animals in the grass of the earth: 4:16let his heart be changed from man’s, and let an animal’s heart be given to him; and let seven times pass over him. 4:17The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whoever he will, and sets up over it the lowest of men. 4:18This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and you, Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, because all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known to me the interpretation; but you are able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in you.

Break Off Your Sins By Righteousness, And Your Iniquities By Showing Mercy To The Poor

4:19Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken mute for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered, Belteshazzar, don’t let the dream, or the interpretation, trouble you. Belteshazzar answered, My lord, the dream be to those who hate you, and the interpretation of it to your adversaries. 4:20The tree that you saw, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached to the sky, and the sight of it to all the earth; 4:21whose leaves were beautiful, and the fruit of it much, and in it was food for all; under which the animals of the field lived, and on whose branches the birds of the sky had their habitation: 4:22it is you, O king, that are grown and become strong; for your greatness is grown, and reaches to the sky, and your dominion to the end of the earth. 4:23Whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from the sky, and saying, Hew down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of the roots of it in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of the sky: and let his portion be with the animals of the field, until seven times pass over him; 4:24this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which is come on my lord the king: 4:25that you shall be driven from men, and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field, and you shall be made to eat grass as oxen, and shall be wet with the dew of the sky, and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whoever he will. 4:26Whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree; your kingdom shall be sure to you, after that you shall have known that the heavens do rule. 4:27Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to you, and break off your sins by righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of your tranquillity.

4:28All this came on the king Nebuchadnezzar. 4:29At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon. 4:30The king spoke and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty? 4:31While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from the sky, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from you: 4:32and you shall be driven from men; and your dwelling shall be with the animals of the field; you shall be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over you; until you know that the Most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whoever he will. 4:33The same hour was the thing fulfilled on Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and ate grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of the sky, until his hair was grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

Those Who Walk In Pride Yahweh Is Able To Abase

4:34At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him who lives forever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation. 4:35All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or tell him, What do you? 4:36At the same time my understanding returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned to me; and my counselors and my lords sought to me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added to me. 4:37Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those who walk in pride he is able to abase.

4:27 shows that the manner one breaks off one's sins is by doing righteousness, and the manner one breaks off one's iniquities is by showing mercy to the poor. We should therefore do righteousness and show mercy to the needy.

Daniel Confessed The Sins Of The People, Judah, To Yahweh

Daniel 9 reads,

9:1In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans, 9:2in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years whereof the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah the prophet, for the accomplishing of the desolations of Jerusalem, even seventy years. 9:3I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and petitions, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. 9:4I prayed to Yahweh my God, and made confession, and said, Oh, Lord, the great and dreadful God, who keeps covenant and lovingkindness with those who love him and keep his commandments, 9:5we have sinned, and have dealt perversely, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even turning aside from your precepts and from your ordinances; 9:6neither have we listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land. 9:7Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us confusion of face, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, who are near, and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you. 9:8Lord, to us belongs confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. 9:9To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness; for we have rebelled against him; 9:10neither have we obeyed the voice of Yahweh our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. 9:11Yes, all Israel have transgressed your law, even turning aside, that they should not obey your voice: therefore has the curse been poured out on us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God; for we have sinned against him. 9:12He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us, and against our judges who judged us, by bringing on us a great evil; for under the whole sky has not been done as has been done on Jerusalem. 9:13As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come on us: yet have we not entreated the favor of Yahweh our God, that we should turn from our iniquities, and have discernment in your truth. 9:14Therefore has Yahweh watched over the evil, and brought it on us; for Yahweh our God is righteous in all his works which he does, and we have not obeyed his voice. 9:15Now, Lord our God, who has brought your people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and have gotten you renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly. 9:16Lord, according to all your righteousness, let your anger and please let your wrath be turned away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people are become a reproach to all who are round about us. 9:17Now therefore, our God, listen to the prayer of your servant, and to his petitions, and cause your face to shine on your sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake. 9:18My God, turn your ear, and hear; open your eyes, and see our desolations, and the city which is called by your name: for we do not present our petitions before you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies’ sake. 9:19Lord, hear; Lord, forgive; Lord, listen and do; don’t defer, for your own sake, my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.

9:20While I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Yahweh my God for the holy mountain of my God; 9:21yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening offering. 9:22He instructed me, and talked with me, and said, Daniel, I am now come forth to give you wisdom and understanding. 9:23At the beginning of your petitions the commandment went forth, and I am come to tell you; for you are greatly beloved: therefore consider the matter, and understand the vision. 9:24Seventy weeks are decreed on your people and on your holy city, to finish disobedience, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy. 9:25Know therefore and discern, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem to the Anointed One, the prince, shall be seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks: it shall be built again, with street and moat, even in troubled times. 9:26After the sixty-two weeks the Anointed One shall be cut off, and shall have nothing: and the people of the prince who shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end of it shall be with a flood, and even to the end shall be war; desolations are determined. 9:27He shall make a firm covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease; and on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate; and even to the full end, and that determined, shall wrath be poured out on the desolate.

Pray That Yahweh Forgives You For His Own Mercies' Sake

It should be noted that when Daniel prayed that Yahweh take action with respect to Jerusalem it was founded on Yahweh's own sake, and on Yahweh's own mercy, and not on Israel or Judah's righteousness. For instead of behaving in righteousness Israel and Judah committed disobedience, rebellion, sin, iniquity and wickedness! Learning from Daniel we should learn what Yahweh's will is on a particular matter, and pray to him to execute his will, for his own name's sake!

Yahweh's Charge Against The Inhabitants Of The Land

Hosea 4 reads

4:1Hear the word of Yahweh, you children of Israel;
For Yahweh has a charge against the inhabitants of the land:

"Indeed there is no truth,
Nor goodness,
Nor knowledge of God in the land.

4:2There is cursing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;
They break boundaries, and bloodshed causes bloodshed.

4:3Therefore the land will mourn,
And everyone who dwells therein will waste away.

All living things in her,
Even the animals of the field and the birds of the sky;
Yes, the fish of the sea also die.

4:4"Yet let no man bring a charge, neither let any man accuse; For your people are like those who bring charges against a priest.

4:5You will stumble in the day,
And the prophet will also stumble with you in the night;
And I will destroy your mother.

Yahweh Rejects Those Who Reject Him

4:6My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you,
That you may be no priest to me.

Because you hate your God’s law,
I will also forget your children.

4:7As they were multiplied, so they sinned against me.
I will change their glory into shame.

4:8They feed on the sin of my people,
And set their heart on their iniquity.

Yahweh Will Punish Sinners For Their Ways

4:9It will be, like people, like priest;
And I will punish them for their ways,
And will repay them for their deeds.

4:10They will eat, and not have enough.
They will play the prostitute, and will not increase;
Because they have abandoned giving to Yahweh.

The Spirit Of Prostitution Leads Prostitutes Astray

4:11Prostitution, wine, and new wine take away understanding.
4:12My people consult with their wooded idol,
And answer to a stick of wood.

Indeed the spirit of prostitution has led them astray,
And they have been unfaithful to their God.

4:13They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains,
And burn incense on the hills, under oaks and poplars and terebinths,
Because its shade is good.

Therefore your daughters play the prostitute,
And your brides commit adultery.

4:14I will not punish your daughters when they play the prostitute,
Nor your brides when they commit adultery;

Because the men consort with prostitutes,
And they sacrifice with the shrine prostitutes;
And the people that does not understand will come to ruin.

4:15"Though you, Israel, play the prostitute,
Yet don’t let Judah offend;
And don’t come to Gilgal,
Neither go up to Beth-aven,
Nor swear, ‘As Yahweh lives.’

4:16For Israel has behaved extremely stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer.
Then how will Yahweh feed them like a lamb in a meadow.

4:17Ephraim is joined to idols.
Leave him alone!

4:18Their drink has become sour.
They play the prostitute continually.
Her rulers dearly love their shameful way.

4:19The wind has wrapped her up in its wings;
And they shall be put to shame because of their sacrifices.

Yahweh Remembers And Punishes The Iniquities Of Those Who Forget Him

Hosea 8:11-14 reads,

8:11Because Ephraim has multiplied altars for sinning,
They became for him altars for sinning.

8:12I wrote for him the many things of my law;
But they were regarded as a strange thing.

8:13As for the sacrifices of my offerings,
they sacrifice flesh and eat it;
But Yahweh doesn’t accept them.

Now he will remember their iniquity,
And punish their sins.
They will return to Egypt.

8:14For Israel has forgotten his Maker and built palaces;
And Judah has multiplied fortified cities;
But I will send a fire on his cities,
And it will devour its fortresses."
