How Yah'shuah's Disciples Receive The Holy Spirit
Acts 8:14-23 reads,
8:14
Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 8:15who, when they had come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Spirit; 8:16for as yet he had fallen on none of them. They had only been baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 8:17Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. 8:18Now when Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 8:19saying, "Give me also this power, that whoever I lay my hands on may receive the Holy Spirit." 8:20But Peter said to him, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! 8:21You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart isn’t right before God. 8:22Repent therefore of this, your wickedness, and ask God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 8:23For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity."It should be noted that the baptism in the Holy Spirit, receipt of the Holy Spirit, comes after prayer for his receipt. Hands should then be laid upon those to receive the Holy Spirit, laid by those so authorised to lay hands for the purpose of the Holy Spirit coming upon one.
The Holy Spirit Cannot Be Bought
It should also be noted that the Holy Spirit dwells in Yahweh's servants by way of Yahweh's gift. The Holy Spirit CANNOT be bought, but is freely given to those who are obedient to Yahweh. It is a satanic heart that thinks that the Mighty One can indeed be bought - the Mighty One who owns even the money that one purports to think he can buy the Mighty One with!
How Saul Received The Holy Spirit
Acts 9:10-19 reads,
9:10
Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias!"He said, "Behold, it’s me, Lord."
9:11
The Lord said to him, "Arise, and go to the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one named Saul, a man of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying, 9:12and in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in, and laying his hands on him, that he might receive his sight."9:13
But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he did to your saints at Jerusalem. 9:14Here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name."9:15
But the Lord said to him, "Go your way, for he is my chosen vessel to bear my name before the nations and kings, and the children of Israel. 9:16For I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name’s sake."9:17
Ananias departed, and entered into the house. Laying his hands on him, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord, who appeared to you in the way which you came, has sent me, that you may receive your sight, and be filled with the Holy Spirit." 9:18Immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he received his sight. He arose and was baptized. 9:19He took food and was strengthened. Saul stayed several days with the disciples who were at Damascus. It should be noted that Ananias was not an apostle, but was still a disciple of Yah'shuah. Even though he wasn't an apostle Yah'shuah authorised him to lay hands upon Saul that the latter may both receive his sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit! It is thus noted that those to lay hands upon others, that the others may receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit, are those so authorised to do so by Yah'shuah. These include apostles and any disciple so authorised.
The Holy Spirit Comforts Yah'shuah's Disciples
Acts 9:31 reads,
9:31
So the assemblies throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria had peace, and were built up. They were multiplied, walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is indeed the Comforter of Yah'shuah's disciples, comforting them when they so need his comfort.
Some Of Yah'shuah's Disciples Received The Holy Spirit Prior To Baptism In Water
Acts 10:34-48 reads,
10:34
Peter opened his mouth and said, "Truly I perceive that God doesn’t show favoritism; 10:35but in every nation he who fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him. 10:36The word which he sent to the children of Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ — he is Lord of all — 10:37that spoken word you yourselves know, which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 10:38even Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 10:39We are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they also killed, hanging him on a tree. 10:40God raised him up the third day, and gave him to be revealed, 10:41not to all the people, but to witnesses who were chosen before by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 10:42He charged us to preach to the people and to testify that this is he who is appointed by God as the Judge of the living and the dead. 10:43All the prophets testify about him, that through his name everyone who believes in him will receive remission of sins."10:44
While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the word. 10:45They of the circumcision who believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was also poured out on the Gentiles. 10:46For they heard them speak with other languages and magnify God.Then Peter answered, 10:47"Can any man forbid the water, that these who have received the Holy Spirit as well as we should not be baptized?" 10:48He commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay some days.
10:38 notes that Yahweh anointed Yah'shuah with the Holy Spirit and with power. From then on Yah'shuah went about performing Yahweh's works. This again shows that the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in a person is necessary for that person to effectively perform the works that Yahweh has given him to perform.
Those who receive the Holy Spirit prior to being baptised in water, such as these that Peter spoke to, and even Saul of Tarsus, should indeed be baptised. Just because one receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit doesn't mean that Yah'shuah's word to comply with baptism in water isn't to be complied with. All of Yah'shuah's words to his disciples should be complied with, even if the order of compliance with all of them is not the same for all of his disciples.
Non-Israelites Baptised In The Holy Spirit
Acts 11:15-18 reads,
11:15
As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them, even as on us at the beginning. 11:16I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you will be baptized in the Holy Spirit.’ 11:17If then God gave to them the same gift as us, when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I, that I could withstand God?"11:18
When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, "Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life!"Peter recalled the lesson he received from Yah'shuah, that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is the receipt of the Holy Spirit. All who have received the Holy Spirit have indeed been baptised in the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit Gave Barnabas Gladness, Goodness And Faith
Acts 11:19-24 reads,
11:19
They therefore who were scattered abroad by the oppression that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except only to Jews. 11:20But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, spoke to the Greeks, preaching the Lord Jesus. 11:21The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number believed and turned to the Lord. 11:22The report concerning them came to the ears of the assembly which was in Jerusalem. They sent out Barnabas to go as far as Antioch, 11:23who, when he had come, and had seen the grace of God, was glad. He exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would remain near to the Lord. 11:24For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and many people were added to the Lord. The positive attributes in Barnabas should be attributed to the Holy Spirit, seeing that he was full of the Holy Spirit. For the Holy Spirit dwelling in him facilitated his being glad at seeing the grace of Yahweh upon the Greeks, even as Yah'shuah rejoiced in the Holy Spirit when he saw the good works performed by his disciples. The Holy Spirit also facilitated Barnabas effectively exhorting Yah'shuah's disciples to remain near to Yahweh with purpose of heart. In other words, it is the Holy Spirit that facilitates Yahweh's servants effectively serving him in the manner that he desires they do.
It should also be noted that it was the hand of Yahweh, the Holy Spirit, who facilitated a great number of new believers and converts to Yah'shuah, upon the preaching of Yah'shuah's disciples from Cyprus and Cyrene.
The Holy Spirit Has Authority Over Yah'shuah's Disciples
Acts 13:1-4 reads,
13:1
Now in the assembly that was at Antioch there were some prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen the foster-brother of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. 13:2As they served the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Separate Barnabas and Saul for me, for the work to which I have called them."13:3
Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. 13:4So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia. From there they sailed to Cyprus. It should be noted that the Holy Spirit has authority to send out Yah'shuah's servants to undertake various works. The Holy Spirit had authority to send out Yah'shuah to the wilderness to be tempted by Satan, and he also has authority to send out Yah'shuah's servants to undertake various duties. Yah'shuah's servants should therefore wholly submit to the authority of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit Prophesied Judgement By Paul
Acts 13:6-12 reads,
13:6
When they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-Jesus, 13:7who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of understanding. The same summoned Barnabas and Saul, and sought to hear the word of God. 13:8But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn aside the proconsul from the faith. 13:9But Saul, who is also called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fastened his eyes on him, 13:10and said, "Full of all deceit and all cunning, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 13:11Now, behold, the hand of the Lord is on you, and you will be blind, not seeing the sun for a season!"Immediately there fell on him a mist and darkness. He went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 13:12Then the proconsul, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
It should be noted that it is upon the filling of the Holy Spirit that Paul was able to utter the words that he did, with the resultant immediate consequences against the false prophet. It is indeed the Holy Spirit who facilitates the effective performance of Yahweh's works.
The Holy Spirit Imparted Joy To Yah'shuah's Disciples
Acts 13:42-52 reads,
13:42
So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. 13:43Now when the synagogue broke up, many of the Jews and of the devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas; who, speaking to them, urged them to continue in the grace of God. 13:44The next Sabbath almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of God. 13:45But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted the things which were spoken by Paul, and blasphemed.13:46
Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly, and said, "It was necessary that God’s word should be spoken to you first. Since indeed you thrust it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 13:47For so has the Lord commanded us, saying,‘I have set you as a light of the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the uttermost parts of the earth.’"
13:48
As the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of God. As many as were appointed to eternal life believed. 13:49The Lord’s word was spread abroad throughout all the region. 13:50But the Jews urged on the devout women of honorable estate, and the chief men of the city, and stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them out of their borders. 13:51But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came to Iconium. 13:52The disciples were filled with joy with the Holy Spirit. It should be noted that the Holy Spirit imparts joy to Yah'shuah's disciples even when they have just gone through a persecution.
The Holy Spirit's Ruling On Whether Non-Israelites Should Keep The Law Of Moses
Acts 15:22-29 reads,
15:22
Then it seemed good to the apostles and the elders, with the whole assembly, to choose men out of their company, and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas: Judas called Barsabbas, and Silas, chief men among the brothers. 15:23They wrote these things by their hand:"The apostles, the elders, and the brothers, to the brothers who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia: greetings. 15:24Because we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, ‘You must be circumcised and keep the law,’ to whom we gave no commandment; 15:25it seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose out men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 15:26men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15:27We have sent therefore Judas and Silas, who themselves will also tell you the same things by word of mouth. 15:28For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay no greater burden on you than these necessary things: 15:29that you abstain from things sacrificed to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality, from which if you keep yourselves, it will be well with you. Farewell."
15:28 notes that the decision the gathering of disciples at Jerusalem arrived at was in harmony with the Holy Spirit's will. Yah'shuah's disciples should abide by the will of the Holy Spirit in their conduct of Yah'shuah's works. For by so abiding in the Holy Spirit they indeed undertake their works in the manner that they should.
How The Holy Spirit Directed Paul's Ministry
Acts 16:6-12 reads,
16:6
When they had gone through the region of Phrygia and Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia. 16:7When they had come opposite Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit didn’t allow them. 16:8Passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. 16:9A vision appeared to Paul in the night. There was a man of Macedonia standing, begging him, and saying, "Come over into Macedonia and help us." 16:10When he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go out to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them. 16:11Setting sail therefore from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and the day following to Neapolis; 16:12and from there to Philippi, which is a city of Macedonia, the first of the district, a Roman colony. We were staying some days in this city. The manner the Holy Spirit dealt with Yah'shuah's servants should be noted. When Yah'shuah's servants seek to undertake the work given them in a specific manner or in a specific place at a specific time, they should indeed ensure that they have the Holy Spirit's approval in so doing. For if and when they attempt to so do without the Holy Spirit's approval or direction, he sometimes forbids them from so acting. Yah'shuah's servants should therefore seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit and respond positively to that guidance.
Pray That All Believing In Yah'shuah Receive The Holy Spirit
Acts 19:1-7 reads,
19:1
It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples. 19:2He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?"They said to him, "No, we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
19:3
He said, "Into what then were you baptized?"They said, "Into John’s baptism."
19:4
Paul said, "John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, on Jesus."19:5
When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 19:6When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other languages, and prophesied. 19:7They were about twelve men in all.It should not be assumed that all believers in Yah'shuah have received the Holy Spirit. For some have received the Holy Spirit, while others have not. Yah'shuah's servants should therefore find out those who haven't yet received the Holy Spirit, that they may be prayed for in order to receive the baptism in the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit Testified To Paul Of Afflictions He Was To Undergo
Acts 20:17-24 reads,
20:17
From Miletus he sent to Ephesus, and called to himself the elders of the assembly. 20:18When they had come to him, he said to them, "You yourselves know, from the first day that I set foot in Asia, how I was with you all the time, 20:19serving the Lord with all humility, with many tears, and with trials which happened to me by the plots of the Jews; 20:20how I didn’t shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, teaching you publicly and from house to house, 20:21testifying both to Jews and to Greeks repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. 20:22Now, behold, I go bound by the Spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there; 20:23except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions wait for me. 20:24But these things don’t count; nor do I hold my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to fully testify to the gospel of the grace of God.Just as the Holy Spirit revealed to Simeon, the servant of Yahweh, of events to take place in his life before his death, so also the Holy Spirit revealed to Paul of events to take place in his life before his death. The Holy Spirit reveals the future to Yah'shuah's servants as and when he chooses.
The Holy Spirit Makes Overseers Of Some Of Yah'shuah's Disciples
Acts 20:25-35 reads,
20:25
Now, behold, I know that you all, among whom I went about preaching the kingdom of God, will see my face no more. 20:26Therefore I testify to you this day that I am clean from the blood of all men, 20:27for I didn’t shrink from declaring to you the whole counsel of God. 20:28Take heed, therefore, to yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of the Lord and God which he purchased with his own blood. 20:29For I know that after my departure, vicious wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock. 20:30Men will arise from among your own selves, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. 20:31Therefore watch, remembering that for a period of three years I didn’t cease to admonish everyone night and day with tears. 20:32Now, brothers, I entrust you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build up, and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 20:33I coveted no one’s silver, or gold, or clothing. 20:34You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my necessities, and to those who were with me. 20:35In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’"20:28 shows that the Holy Spirit has authority to make overseers of Yah'shuah's servants, that they may shepherd the assembly of Yahweh. Those to shepherd Yahwehs assembly should be those specifically so selected by the Holy Spirit, even as the Holy Spirit specifically chose Barnabas and Saul for a special work.
The Holy Spirit Prophesied By Agabus
Acts 21:8-13 reads,
21:8
On the next day, we, who were Paul’s companions, departed, and came to Caesarea. We entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. 21:9Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. 21:10As we stayed there some days, a certain prophet named Agabus came down from Judea. 21:11Coming to us, and taking Paul’s belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, "Thus says the Holy Spirit: ‘So will the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man who owns this belt, and will deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.’"
21:12
When we heard these things, both we and they of that place begged him not to go up to Jerusalem. 21:13Then Paul answered, "What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."Just as prophets of old prophesied by the Holy Spirit, so also do prophets who are Yah'shuah's disciples. For so did Agabus prophesy concerning Paul.
The Holy Spirit Spoke Through Isaiah The Prophet
Acts 28:23-29 reads,
28:23
When they had appointed him a day, they came to him into his lodging in great number. He explained to them, testifying about the kingdom of God, and persuading them concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning until evening. 28:24Some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved. 28:25When they didn’t agree among themselves, they departed after Paul had spoken one word, "The Holy Spirit spoke well through Isaiah, the prophet, to our fathers, 28:26saying,‘Go to this people, and say,
In hearing, you will hear,
And will in no way understand.
In seeing, you will see,
And will in no way perceive.
28:27
For this people’s heart has grown callous.Lest they should see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
Understand with their heart,
And would turn again,
And I would heal them.’
28:28
"Be it known therefore to you, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles. They will also hear."28:29
When he had said these words, the Jews departed, having a great dispute among themselves. The words the prophets of old spoke, including those uttered through Isaiah, came from the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit Of Christ Is Synonymous With The Holy Spirit
1 Peter 1:10-12 reads,
1:10
Concerning this salvation, the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, 1:11searching for what or what kind of time the Spirit of Christ, which was in them, pointed to, when he testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glories that should follow them. 1:12To whom it was revealed, that not to themselves, but to you, did they minister these things, which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent out from heaven; which things angels desire to look into. The Holy Spirit is also called the Spirit of Christ.
Peter likens the Holy Spirit to a person, for he says that "he", referring to the Holy Spirit, testified beforehand of various things. Peter also asserts that the Holy Spirit preached the gospel, having been sent out from heaven for this purpose, and doing so through human servants. Therefore just as the Holy Spirit dwelt in the prophets of old, and prophesied concerning Christ, so also the Holy Spirit dwells in those servants of Yah'shuah, and through them preaches the gospel.
The Voice Of The Holy Spirit Is More Certain Than The Voice Of Signs
2 Peter 1:16-21 reads,
1:16
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 1:17For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." 1:18This voice we heard come out of heaven, when we were with him in the holy mountain. 1:19We have the more sure word of prophecy; whereunto you do well that you take heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the day star arises in your hearts: 1:20knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation. 1:21For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit.Peter notes that the prophetic word is MORE SURE than the sign of hearing a voice from heaven confirming that Yah'shuah is indeed Yahweh's Son in whom he is well pleased. For the prophetic word is that of the Holy Spirit, and not human word or even heavenly word. In other words, the words of the Holy Spirit are more certain than other heavenly words coming by way of signs.
Therefore, relying on Peter's teaching, one should place greater reliance upon the words of the Holy Spirit than upon signs that one experiences or witnesses.
Pray As The Holy Spirit Gives You Utterance
Jude 17-20 reads,
1:17
But you, beloved, remember the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 1:18They said to you that "In the last time there will be mockers, walking after their own ungodly lusts." 1:19These are they who cause divisions, and are sensual, not having the Spirit. 1:20But you, beloved, keep building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit.Praying in the Holy Spirit means praying or uttering words to Yahweh as one is moved to do so by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit has power to enable those he dwells in to speak in various languages extolling the mighty works of Yahweh. He therefore also has power to enable those praying to Yahweh to utter appropriate words to Yahweh.
It should be noted that Jude asserts that those who partake of unrighteous deeds, such mocking, walking in ungodly lusts, causing division and being sensual, are those devoid of the Holy Spirit. In other words, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in one enables that person to undertake Yahweh's works and walk in Yahweh's will. But those without the Holy Spirit dwelling in them do not have the power to abide in Yahweh's will, and therefore walk outside his will, succumbing to Satan.
