YAHWEH'S COVENANTS WITH AVRAHAM
Yahweh's Covenant Of Land With Avram
Beresheet 15: 18-21
15:18In
that day Yahweh made a covenant with Avram, saying, "To your seed have I
given this land, from the
Yahweh's covenant with Avram to give to Avram's seed the land from the
Yahweh's Covenant With Avraham And Avraham's Seed
Beresheet 17: 1-14
17:1When Avram was ninety-nine years old, Yahweh appeared to Avram, and said to him, "I am El Shaddai. Walk before me, and be blameless. 17:2I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly."
17:3Avram
fell on his face. The Mighty One talked with him, saying, 17:4"As for me, behold, my covenant is
with you. You will be the father of a multitude of nations. 17:5Neither will your name any more be called
Avram, but your name will be Avraham; for the father of a multitude of nations have
I made you. 17:6I will make you
exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of you. Kings will come out of you.
17:7I will establish my covenant
between me and you and your seed after you throughout their generations for an
everlasting covenant, to be a Mighty One to you and to your seed after you. 17:8I will give to you, and to your seed after
you, the land where you are traveling, all the
17:9The
Mighty One said to Avraham, "As for you, you will keep my covenant, you
and your seed after you throughout their generations. 17:10This is my covenant, which you shall keep,
between me and you and your seed after you. Every male among you shall be
circumcised. 17:11You shall be circumcised
in the flesh of your foreskin. It will be a token of a covenant between me and
you. 17:12He who is eight days old
will be circumcised among you, every male throughout your generations, he who
is born in the house, or bought with money of any foreigner who is not of your
seed. 17:13He who is born in your
house, and he who is bought with your money, must be circumcised. My covenant
will be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 17:14The uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the
flesh of his foreskin, that soul shall be cut off from his people. He has
broken my covenant."
Yahweh's everlasting covenant with Avraham and Avraham's seed throughout their generations, to be Mighty One to them and to give them all the land of Kanaan for an everlasting possession.
Yahweh's Covenant With Avraham Not Limited To Avraham's Descendants
It should also be noted that Yahweh's everlasting covenant was not limited to Avraham's physical descendants. It was also applicable to those who were not Avraham's descendants but were slaves of Avraham and of his descendants. Therefore, by coming under the authority of Avraham and his seed after him, one could indeed share in the everlasting covenant between Yahweh and Avraham and Avraham's seed after him.
Therefore, with respect to this everlasting covenant, Yahweh gave Avraham and his seed after him pre-eminence over other human beings!
Yahweh's Covenant With Avraham Established Through Yitzchak
Beresheet 17: 15-21
17:15The Mighty One said to Avraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but her name will be Sarah. 17:16I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. Yes, I will bless her, and she will be a mother of nations. Kings of peoples will come from her."
17:17Then Avraham fell on his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, "Will a child be born to him who is one hundred years old? Will Sarah, who is ninety years old, give birth?" 17:18Avraham said to The Mighty One, "Oh that Yishma'el might live before you!"
17:19The
Mighty One said, "No, but Sarah, your wife, will bear you a son. You shall
call his name Yitzchak. I will establish my covenant with him for an
everlasting covenant for his seed after him. 17:20As
for Yishma'el, I have heard you. Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him
fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly. He will become the father of
twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. 17:21But my covenant I establish with Yitzchak,
whom Sarah will bear to you at this set time in the next year."
Yahweh's everlasting covenant with Avraham's seed after him was to be established with Avraham's son Yitzchak, and not with Avraham's son Yishmael. It should be noted that this is an everlasting covenant with Avraham's seed throughout their generations! Implying that as long as the generations of Avraham's seed exist, this covenant continues to be remain in application, seeing that it is an everlasting covenant!
Shemot (Exodus) 2: 23-25
2:23It
happened in the course of those many days, that the king of Mitzrayim died, and
the children of Yisra'el sighed because of the bondage, and they cried, and
their cry came up to The Mighty One because of the bondage. 2:24The Mighty One heard their groaning, and
The Mighty One remembered his covenant with Avraham, with Yitzchak, and with
Ya`akov. 2:25The Mighty One saw the
children of Yisra'el, and The Mighty One was concerned about them.
Yahweh's everlasting covenant with Avraham and his seed after him was made
with Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov. It is therefore Yaakov's seed after him who
were to inherit the
Shemot 6: 2-8
6:2The
Mighty One spoke to Moshe, and said to him, "I am Yahweh; 6:3and I appeared to Avraham, to Yitzchak, and
to Ya`akov, as El Shaddai; and by my name Yahweh was I not known to them? 6:4I have also established my covenant with
them, to give them the
Yahweh's time for the fulfilment of his covenant to Avraham, Yitzchak and
Yaakov had come, to give to their seed after them the
